Sub-grid-scale effects in magnetised plasma turbulence

چکیده

In the present paper, we use a coarse-graining approach to investigate nonlinear redistribution of free energy in both position and scale space for weakly collisional magnetised plasma turbulence. For this purpose, high-resolution numerical simulations gyrokinetic (GK) turbulence that span proton-electron range scales, straight magnetic guide field geometry. Accounting averaged effect particles' fast gyro-motion on slow fluctuations, GK approximation captures dominant mechanisms strongly Here, system is coarse-grained with respect cut-off scale, separating real contributions interactions from coarse-grid-scales sub-grid-scales (SGS). We concentrate analysis SGS effects. Not only allows us flux across but also now analyse its spatial density. find net value an order magnitude smaller than positive negative density contributions. The dependence results filter type analysed. Moreover, advection space. This rather novel can help development models account advective unstable structures fusion plasmas, turbulent transport saturation.

Magnetised plasma turbulence in clusters of galaxies

Cluster plasmas are magnetised already at very low magnetic field strength. Low collisionality implies that conservation of the first adiabatic invariant results in an anisotropic viscous stress (Braginskii viscosity) or, equivalently, anisotropic plasma pressure. This triggers firehose and mirror instabilities, which have growth rates proportional to the wavenumber down to scales of the order ...

A Grid based distributed simulation of Plasma Turbulence

Grid technology is widespreading, but most grid-enabled applications just exploit shared storage resources rather than computational ones, or utilize static remote allocation mechanisms of Grid platforms. In this paper the porting on a Globus equipped platform of a hierarchically distributed-shared memory parallel version of an application for particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation of plasma turbule...

New Characteristics of Zonal Flows in Multi-scale Plasma Turbulence

The evolution of multi-scale plasma turbulence including resistive MHD and micro-instability is studied based on a 5-field gyrofluid simulation aiming to understand complex nonlinear interaction and turbulent transport. Here we report two new findings on the zonal flow (ZF) characteristics: (1) A robust oscillatory ZF with finite frequency is created in slab geometry for the first time due to t...
